McConnell, Barr Help Sterling Health Solutions Secure Federal Grant Resources

May 9, 2018
WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and U.S. Congressman Andy Barr (KY-06) announced today that Sterling Health Solutions (SHS) was awarded more than $6 million over three years from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). Senator McConnell and Congressman Barr contacted HRSA in support of SHS’ competitive federal grant application. SHS plans to use this funding in its mission to deliver much-needed health care services to underserved regions in Kentucky.

SHS located in Mount Sterling, Kentucky, is a non-profit operating in Bath, Clark, Menifee, Nicholas, and Montgomery counties. They provide a wide range of comprehensive medical, dental, and mental health services to many low-income communities that often suffer from poor health outcomes and severe substance abuse problems. These federal resources will help SHS hire additional personnel, purchase equipment, and cover other costs that will allow it to serve nearly 6,500 Kentuckians each year.

“I was pleased to support Sterling Health Solutions in their effort to provide more comprehensive health services to Kentuckians in need,” said Senator McConnell. “In areas hardest-hit by the substance abuse epidemic and with historically poor health outcomes, these additional resources are desperately needed to increase the number of people receiving health care and to improve their overall quality of life. The inspiring work of men and women at organizations like Sterling Health Solutions can continue to make a difference in the lives of many Kentuckians, and I was proud to assist them in this endeavor.”

“Senator McConnell is a champion for equal access to quality health services for all. The Senator’s support for our service area competition grant award, which supports continued funding for our Community Health Centers, is yet another example of how his support has reached the Appalachian region of Eastern Kentucky. Locally, this award will allow Sterling Health Solutions, Inc. to continue providing access to primary and preventative health services for medically underserved residents in Montgomery, Bath, Menifee, Nicholas and Clark counties,” said Harold T. Brown, MBA, CEO/Executive Director, Sterling Health Solutions, Inc. “We are equally grateful for the continued efforts of Congressman Andy Barr. We also want to thank Rep. Barr for his support on our successful competitive award. We are grateful his voice for the individuals and families in the communities that we serve and for his support of healthcare organizations like Sterling Health Solutions, Inc. and other Federally Qualified Healthcare Centers that serve as the healthcare safety nets for our communities.”
Congressman Barr said, “The awarding of this federal grant will provide invaluable comprehensive health care to traditionally underserved and disadvantaged populations in rural areas of the Sixth District. The improved infrastructure that will result from this grant will significantly increase the number of patients receiving health care and better coordinate care to individuals in these areas. I am proud that my office was able to assist in securing this grant for Sterling Health Solutions and I would like to thank Harold Brown and his outstanding team of health care professionals for their dedication to providing quality health care to our citizens in underserved areas that need it the most.”
